In what way is isolation and connection a common theme in the book American Gods?

The gods brought to America by immigrants long ago find that they are being forgotten, isolated by power grabs from ... well, the top dog, mainly.

However, the gods in America did find that the best places for them to 'set up' as rendevouz points and even homes were the little, isolated mom-and-pop tourist traps that grow, live and die around the highways of America.

The gods connect when called in their own peculiar fashions.

They definitely connect when war is declared.

They connect around sacrifices, too.

But they are further and further isolated from the legends, myths and folklore that brought them into being in the first place, because those stories are being forgotten by too many actual people.

Gaiman really goes back and forth in this huge book, half of which was, in my opinion, in excess of what it could have been.

Guess I didn't feel 'connected,' though I read the whole thing--
