Which medium would you choose for the isolation and identification of staphylococcus aureus?

Staph aureus will grow on any general nutrient agar, but that is not selective.

It can for example be grown on blood agar plates (not selective), and there it will lyse the blood (hemolysis), which is characteristic (but not unique) to Staph aureus.

A very selective medium, specific for Staphylococcus is a selective medium called Baird Parker. This is a medium on which most other bacteria cannot grow, because it contains tellurite. Staph will grow on this plate with characteristic zones and rings, and it also produces a black coloration.

There are also other selective plates, such as 7% NaCl (very salty) on which most bacteria cannot grow, but Staph can.
