Do you think it is true that isolation more than likely will cause dementia over time?

say you became a hermit......or if you are locked in solitary confinement.........what are or would be the effects you think for those who may know?

whyand how so?

Thanks for your answers!

Do you think it is true that isolation more than likely will cause dementia over time?
I think it must have more to do with the actual using of your brain - everyone has access to information, to books, to computers, to challenges, actions and involvement. I would think those that choose to isolate themselves totally, have only their own thoughts - which is sometimes a very scary place indeed. Having said that however, I also think dementia is the result of brain chemistry changes. So, which actually comes first - a choice to isolate or the onset of dementia being the force behind the choice?

Like most everything else, there's not one true answer but several - which leads me to the question, why do humans continually look for one nice, neat little answer to each and every complex issue of life?Do you think it is true that isolation more than likely will cause dementia over time?
As an experienced psychology consultant, my answer to this question is that: psychology, when dealing with biopsychology, should be as objective as possible, which means that it is dangerous to make assumptions that are not evidence based.

So with regards to this question, we have to accept that dementia is a brain disease that exists in a number of forms, which can be physically apparent, and because of the shear complexity of the brain, and is ability to be illusive (having flexibility, compensating for loss, and avoiding detection) no one knows the true causes of dementia.

So, in answer to this question (';Do you think it is true that isolation more than likely will cause dementia over time?';) no one can say whether or not isolation will, more than likely, cause dementia over time.
It might escalate it. Brain cells and habits that arn't used or excised for a long time decay. So social skills, conversational ability, reasoning, word power, etc. Even in normal no-hermit populations, there's some evidence that regular brain exercises (logic puzzles, crosswords, etc) slow the progress of dementia (The ';use it or lose it'; idea, basically). So as socialising is more mentally demanding than being a hermit, it may be that dementia increases faster in the hermit population.
i think u may have a point my mum has had dementia for 3 yrs before that she was on her own for a couple of years after my dad died, she was a very shy person with no friends as such and relied totally on him so was totally lost when he died. i feel that thats what tipped her over the edge into the severe dementia she has now.
Simple Answer: Yes.
