As a child: NO!!! Most severely disturbed people and criminals experienced isolation as a child. Ted Kazcinsky spent a month in isolation when he was 9 months old because of a medical problem. His Mother said he went in a normal, happy child, and came out an extremely introverted and callous weirdo.Does physical or social isolation make a person better?
Maybe for some people..like a monk who wants to give his attention to meditation and serenity or a hermit who just wants to be alone to keep from going insane from the crazy world of people.
I'm not very social....it's because everywhere I look there's people doing something wrong...I like to learn from people through books.Does physical or social isolation make a person better?
No, It can traumatize a person! We are social and need emotional contact with others.
Like so many questions in psychology, it depends on the person. For extroverts, for example, social isolation can be extremely traumatic, whereas introverts relish it. This is a common problem in the field: you cannot make sweeping statements. In physics: apples fall downwards, always. In psych, the direction of fall varies from person to person.
In small doses maybe, where the person can come aside and have some mental rest and recreation. But enforced and continued isolation is very detrimental, the worst punishment which prisons offer is solitary confinement... it can drive people to insanity.
I think sometimes, if the person chooses to be alone for a little while, it can help. If they go on a walk, for instance, and don't have to be responsible for anyone else during that time, and can just spend time thinking, maybe. But for the most part, isolation can lead to people overthinking things. And if the isolation is imposed on them, well, forget it. They won't become ';better.';
